BLUF:
Given the presence, soon enough nearly universal, of ISR-linked precision standoff attack systems, US Armed Forces must operate as an integral, net-centric US Joint [Combined] Force under unified command at Brigade level and up. At Battalion TF level and up would be optimal.
The US Joint Force must be designed for homeland defense only and, integral with that, an occasional and brief but successful trans-border punitive expedition. Sea, air, and land lanes are now open for friendly transit only.
Hosts of stakeholders [oligarchs] disconsolate with this pivot to the nation’s interests in precedence to their own must hear from USG officials as with incontrovertible and convincing force, “Growl you may but march you must.” They’ll march.
As observed by Clausewitz and confirmed by Svechin, defensive warfare is that most destructive of enemy personnel and equipment and therefore that most conducive to his unconditional surrender and, what is most important, renouncing his will to aggress.
Defensive warfare ipso facto is spiritually and theologically legitimate. Offensive warfare ipso facto is spiritually and theologically illegitimate. Tactically, operationally, and strategically the latter never accomplishes its objective just because it is illegitimate. Only mental and moral defectives experience urges to conduct offensive warfare.
Since about 1997, US officials civilian and military, upon allowing themselves to fall into an offensive warfare frame-of-mind urged up by un-American counsel, designed US Armed Forces to conduct offensive warfare upon their whim, even to extending US Armed Forces conducting a legitimate punitive expedition beyond their time of success and into illegitimate offensive warfare.
Examples of US officials making US Armed Forces conduct offensive warfare, which is definitionally illegitimate, include: pushing NATO nation membership eastwards, pushing US military and research facilities — with weapons — into former Warsaw Pact nations, conducting combined arms operations in Serbia, and pushing US Armed Forces into combat past the legitimacy of punitive expeditions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Now, US officials make US Armed Forces conduct offensive warfare in and out of uniform and by proxy inside Russian borderlands (Ukraine means borderlands) and under pretext of not even being there at all. No punitive expedition preceded this use of US Armed Forces for offensive warfare.
Today, US civilian officials push omni-directional, omni-temporal offensive warfare, only that — also called bullying — through the three assets of US statecraft: Diplomacy, Finance, War-Fighting. They do not understand why nations of the earth comprising the majority of human creatures and working the majority of global GDP abominate and frustrate their aims. They imagine no one has authority to oppose their urges.
Networked, echeloned, ISR-linked precision standoff attack systems obsolete offensive warfare -- which is theologically illegitimate in any case -- and reduce necessities for punitive expeditions -- which are theologically legitimate -- outside a nation's territories to nearly zero.
The USA is an island nation, not a continental nation. We have neither need nor capacity to sustain offensive warfare on our own or on any other continent. Neither should we have will for doing that.
Our need for US Armed Forces to conduct punitive expeditions outside our territory diminishes by the year. Our capacity for US Armed Forces to conduct punitive expeditions outside our territory diminishes, at the moment, by the month.
US Armed Forces should be redesigned as The US Joint Force, or, The US Combined Arms Force, or, The US Penta-Force. The components of this single, net-centric force are: Space, Air, Cyber(Word), Sea, Land.
The mission of The US Joint Force is homeland defense. It should be designed for defensive warfare of the homeland, on the homeland, and not other than that. Americans have will and means to defend their homeland, more than enough. Defending someone else's homeland is not Americans' responsibility. We have neither will nor means to do that. Nor should we have.
A sub-set of The US Joint Force's mission to defend the American homeland is rare and temporary but sufficient and effective punitive expeditionary warfare outside territory belonging to The USA. This force belongs to The US Joint Force as a latent formation easily and rapidly expandable to a light or heavy force for a specific, limited mission. Reserve and Guard Forces should be structured for rapid call-up to light or heavy — but limited and temporary — punitive expeditionary warfare.
Examples would include: European, Latin American, African, and Middle Eastern drug cartels, governments, NGOs, and corporations encouraging fanatics to induce chaos in The USA, and oligarchs touting economic, medical, or political agendas harmful to Americans.
The US Marine Corps, The US XVIII Airborne Corp, The US Navy Carrier Strike/Battle Group, The US Air Force Strategic Bomber, the M1A1 Tank, the Bradley IFV, and accessories to these formations are obsolete if not pernicious instruments of warfare. They should be marked for closure.
All US military facilities and personnel outside US territory -- including COCOM assets and HQs -- should be redeployed stateside. These are vestiges of an offensive warfare (e.g., EUCOM) or obsolete defensive warfare (e.g., NATO) frame-of-mind. US COCOMs should be redesigned to function as geo-specific ISR feed integration centers and to expand to C4 as well rapidly when needed to conduct rare and temporary punitive expeditions. US COCOMs replace CIA-USAID altogether.
One anticipates officials of The US State, Agriculture, and Justice Departments, The CIA-USAID, their sycophantic swarms of NGOs, much of The US Defense Department, and the entire US Foreign Policy Establishment in current residence remarking opprobriously, if at all, upon these necessary inevitabilities of US Statecraft today and tomorrow.
