At risk of having to plead guilty to a charge of dilettantism, there is this:
Any time something comes in threes, one way and another The Holy Trinity of Christian and Hindu practice is referenced. All of these always correlate with several identifiable phenomena:
Brahma, Shiva, Vishnu correlate with Father, Son, Holy Spirit.
Brahma, Shiva, Vishnu also correlate with Creation, Destruction, Preservation.
Consorts Saraswati, Parvathi, Lakshmi correlate with Culture, Power, Wealth.
Sathya, Dharma, Prema correlate with Truth, Proper Conduct, Love.
Sat, Chit, Ananda correlate with Truth, Consciousness, Bliss.
Sat, Chit, Ananda also correlate with Reason, Goodness, Beauty.
All of these correlate in the order given.1
Three things signal much more than 3 things, just as 2 + 2 = 4 + >4.
Where there is a three, there is The Holy Trinity, just as where there is a five there is Stability. And in all cases of all of the above -- plus more -- there is beauty. We always look right at it and rarely see it.2
A Russian mystic, expat, painter, diarist, and traveler -- and his wife Helena -- propounded the thought of Peace Through Culture: Pax Cultura. This paralleled a thought of Tolstoy's and, I suspect, of Scriabin's and Rachmaninov's.
His work greatly affected our family's young years, and to this day. Once Russia gets in your heart, she does not leave, cannot leave, does not, would not want to leave.
Britishers traditionally fell in love with the Middle Eastern deserts. They are desolate but clean. Americans, I think, more easily fall in love with Russian wealth. It is huge, reassuring, and mysterious.
Russia, BTW, protects Christian antiquities residents of the Latin Church and Culture know not of. Some throw light on the Life of Jesus and Patristic Era writing and iconography, light which sends the serious towards India, Tibet, and Central and East Asia. Roerich and his wife, Helena, had discovered some of these tracks, writing and painting of them.
The Golden Section also is known as The Divine Proportion. Besides being the most beautiful, this relationship is also the world's most stable structure. One of many easy examples: the sides of a pentagon are to its diagonals as 1 is to 1.618. The Boeing 747 is said to be composed of Divine Proportion rectangles.
One way to describe the Russian soul is to observe that, unlike Cartesian civilization, which demands rational, stand-alone numbers almost exclusively -- science they call it -- Russian civilization fosters the classical Greek realization that reality in fulness embodies proportions -- one might say irrational numbers, ceaseless dynamics -- rather than merely stand-alone and more or less stationary values.
Among many other consequences, this phenomenon causes Russian General Staffs to conduct planning 24/7/365: proportions are dynamic, making reality dynamic. Therefore, continuous adjustment is required to stay in touch with reality, which one may try to cheat at one's mortal peril. Cartesian civilization likes to get something fixed -- a stand-alone number, always in place -- and expects it to stay there more or less forever.
